The Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung grants two Advancement Awards for the upcoming cycle 2021/22. The prize is directed to artists with a relationship to Northern Germany (birthplace, current place of work/life, studies).
The current call for proposals relates to the curatorial focus of IN:VISIBILITIES, which will focus on the visibilities and invisibilities of media technologies over the next two years. The focus will be on the social and political dimensions of a long-digitalized everyday life that also encompass material and physical processes. What kind of fluid, hybrid, and critical public spheres can emerge when these are recomposed according to the degree of in:visibility – and what subjectivities emerge from this?
Technological, virtual, social, and seemingly natural attributions begin to intersect in the field of in:visibilities, often formulating paradoxical promises and commercializing them. The so-called postdigital critiques and questions the promises of immateriality and perfection of the digital to create a new set of relations. This is based on the infrastructures of digital networks and adopts their principles of design and organization beyond the screen.
IN:VISIBILITIES ties in with these new relations: Questions of subjectivity and authenticity are posed as well as their forms of representation and publicity. Art, itself intertwined with the moment of display – of becoming public – can create new visual relations through practices of alienation and re-narration – and in doing so form an echo to the digital. So how can effects of manipulation, circulation, immersion, and networking be used to articulate, critique, or change in:visibilities?
We are looking for artistic practices that deal with the relations and contradictions that produce in:visibilities under post-digital conditions and work with (new) concepts of body, public, community and liveness. Aesthetic aspects of representation, subjectivity and the materiality of things will be related to political thinking, such as queer, (eco)feminist, postcolonial and intersectional perspectives. The call is aimed at practices that are connected to the digital, but do not have to work with digital media as such; on the contrary, there are no media restrictions, the call is explicitly open to transdisciplinary artistic practices that are at the intersection of visual arts and performance, fashion, literature, theory and design. However, an artistic focus is a precondition. The application of groups is possible.
The Advancement Prize includes
- Prize: The Advancement Award is endowed with 3.000 € (The recipient artists will receive 2.000 € in 2021 and 1.000 € in 2020). Groups/collectives will receive an additional 1.000 €.
- Publicaton: The Advancement Award comes with the option of a publication, to be published in collaboration with the artistic director. For this, an additional budget is provided.
- Exhibiton/Events: The Advancement Award includes a final presentation and entitles the awardee to engage in public programming, accompanying events, or other formats. For this, an additional budget is provided.
- Family-friendly residency: The M.1, the Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung’s large building in Hohenlockstedt, provides the awardees with a total of 800 sqm of exhibition and production space for focused artistic work. The awardees have the option to use the large, family-friendly, and fully furnished apartment in the M.1, which is located on the same floor as the bright and spacious studio. During the residency the children and partner of the awardees are welcome. We offer to support the awardees in finding childcare solutions. A residency is not a mandatory element of the Advancement Award.
Prerequisites
- Relationship to Northern Germany: Applicants must have a strong relationship to Northern Germany (Schleswig Holstein, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Bremen and Niedersachsen). Therefore the applicant must either be born, or currently reside in, or have completed their studies in this region, or the artistic work must demonstrate a strong focus on Northern Germany.
- Higher Education: The applicant must have graduated from an art school or university not longer than 8 years ago. Applicants without a higher education degree should consult the artistic director of the Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung prior to applying. Applicants who are currently still enrolled cannot be considered.
- Applications by groups or collectives are welcome.

- Completed Cover Form (download here)
- Project Proposal: a short description of a project that you want to realize within the time frame of 2021/22, possibly also explaining why you believe that the M.1 is a suitable place for this project. You can also use this space to share your conceptual ideas for a possible publication (in total max. 1 page A4).
- Visualisation: images, sketches, collages or other visual material that accompanies/elaborates your project proposal (in total max. 1 page A4).
- Portfolio/ Work Samples: portfolio with up to five realized artistic projects and/or up to five publications
- CV including a list of past and current projects/exhibitions and grants/awards. For collectives/ group applications: Include a list of past and current projects/exhibitions as a collective; add short bios for each member of the collective.
- The submitted materials should be assembled into one pdf file and should not exceed a total size of 15MB.
All materials can be submitted in German or English language.
Application deadline is March 31, 2021. The jury will make its decision in mid April. Die Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung schreibt für den Turnus 2021/22 zwei Förderpreise aus. Die Ausschreibung richtet sich an Künstler*innen, die nachweislich einen Bezug zu Norddeutschland haben.
Die aktuelle Ausschreibung bezieht sich inhaltlich auf den kuratorischen Fokus von IN:VISIBILITIES, der in den nächsten beiden Jahren die Sichtbarkeiten und Unsichtbarkeiten medialer Technologien fokussiert. Im Zentrum stehen die sozialen und politischen Dimensionen eines längt digitalisierten Alltags, der auch materielle und körperliche Prozesse umfasst. Welche fluiden, hybriden, kritischen Formen von Öffentlich keit können entstehen, wenn diese sich je nach Un:Sichtbarkeitsgrad neu zusammensetzen – und welche Subjektivitäten gehen daraus hervor?
Technologische, virtuelle, soziale und scheinbar natürliche Zuschreibungen beginnen im Feld der Un:Sicht barkeiten zu überschneiden, was oft paradoxe Versprechen formuliert und kommerziell verwertet wird. Das sogenannte Postdigitale kritisiert und hinterfragt die Versprechen von Immaterialität und Perfektion des Digitalen, um ein neues Set von Relationen zu schaffen. Dieses ist an Infrastrukturen digitaler Netzwerke angelehnt und übernimmt deren Gestaltungs- und Organisationsprinzipien auch jenseits des Bildschirms.
IN:VISIBILITIES knüpft an diese neuen Beziehungen an: Fragen nach Subjektivität und Authentizität werden genauso gestellt wie deren Formen von Repräsentation und Öffentlichkeit. Kunst, selbst mit dem Moment des displays – des Öffentlich Werdens – verflochten, kann durch Praxen der Verfremdung und Wieder-Erzählung neue Sichtverhältnisse schaffen – und dabei ein Echo zum Digitalen bilden. Wie also können Effekte der Manipulation, Zirkulation, Immersion und Vernetzung genutzt werden, um Un:Sicht barkeiten zu artikulieren, kritisieren oder zu verändern?
Gesucht werden künstlerische Praxen, die sich mit den Verhältnissen und Widersprüchen beschäftigen, die Un:Sichtbarkeiten unter postdigitalen Bedingungen herstellen und mit (neuen) Konzepten von Körper, Öffentlichkeit, Gemeinschaft und Liveness arbeiten. Ästhetische Aspekte der Repräsentation, Subjektivität und der Materialität von Dingen sollen in Zusammenhang gebracht werden mit politischem Denken, etwa queeren, (öko)feministischen, postkolonialen und intersektionalen Ansätzen. Die Ausschreibung richtet sich an Praktiken, die zwar mit dem Digitalen in Verbindung stehen, dabei aber nicht mit digitalen Medien arbeiten müssen; im Gegenteil: Es gibt keine medialen Beschränkungen, die Ausschreibung ist explizit offen für transdisziplinäre künstlerische Praktiken, die sich an der Schnittstelle von Bildender Kunst und Performance, Mode, Literatur, Theorie und Design befinden. Voraussetzung ist jedoch ein künstlerischer Schwerpunkt. Die Bewerbung von Gruppen ist möglich.
Förderumfang
- Preisgeld: Der Förderpreis ist mit einem Preisgeld von 3.000 € dotiert (angenommene Projekte erhalten 2021 2.000 € und 2020 noch einmal 1.000 € Preisgeld). Bei Gruppen/Kollektiven wird das Preisgeld insgesamt um 1.000 € erhöht.
- Publikation: Der Förderpreis ist mit der Option einer Publikation verbunden, welche in Zusammenarbeit mit der künstlerischen Leitung herausgegeben wird. Für die Publikation steht ein gesondertes Budget zur Verfügung.
- Ausstellung / Veranstaltungen: Mit dem Förderpreis sind eine Abschlusspräsentation in Form einer Ausstellung (oder in einem anderen Format) sowie evtl. begleitende Veranstaltungen verbunden. Hierfür steht ein gesondertes Budget zur Verfügung.
- Familienfreundliche Residenz: Das M.1, das Gebäude der Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung in Hohenlock stedt, bietet mit insgesamt 800 qm Ausstellungsräumen reichlich Produktionsfläche und Ruhe für konzentriertes, künstlerisches Arbeiten. Die Preisträger*innen können drei Monate lang kostenfrei eine möblierte Wohnung im M.1 nutzen, die aufgrund ihrer Größe sehr familienfreundlich ist und im gleichen Stockwerk wie das geräumige und helle Atelier liegt. Bei einem Residenz-Aufenthalt sind sowohl Kinder als auch Partner*innen willkommen. Wir helfen gerne organisatorisch mit eventuell benötigter Kinderbetreuung vor Ort. Es besteht jedoch keine Residenzpflicht.
Voraussetzungen
- Bezug zu Norddeutschland: Bewerber*innen müssen entweder in Norddeutschland (Schleswig Holstein, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Bremen und Niedersachsen) geboren oder wohn haft sein oder ihren Hochschulabschluss in dieser Region erworben haben, oder aber in ihrer bisherigen künstlerischen Arbeit einen Bezug zur norddeutschen Region hergestellt haben.
- Studium: Der Studienabschluss der Bewerber*innen darf nicht länger als 8 Jahre zurückliegen. Bewerber*innen ohne Hochschulabschluss sollten ihre Bewerbung vorab mit der künstlerischen Leitung der Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung besprechen. Bewerber*innen, die zum Zeitpunkt der Bewerbung noch studieren, können nicht berücksichtigt werden.
- Bewerbungen von Gruppen/Kollektiven sind möglich.

- Projektskizze: Kurzbeschreibung des Projektvorhabens, das in der Förderzeit realisiert werden soll, und ggfs. dazu, warum das M.1 ein passender Ort für dessen Realisierung ist. Gerne kann an dieser Stelle auf die konzeptionellen Ideen für die Publikation eingegangen werden (insgesamt max. eine Seite A4).
- Visualisierung: Fotografien, Skizzen, Collagen oder Ähnliches zur visuellen Erläuterung / Begleitung der Projektskizze (max. zwei A4 Seiten).
- Arbeitsproben: Portfolio mit Materialien von bis zu fünf weiteren realisierten künstlerischen Projekten oder/und max. fünf Publikationen geringeren Umfangs.
- Lebenslauf inkl. Auflistung bisheriger und aktueller Projekte/Ausstellungen und Förderungen. Bei Gruppenbewerbungen: Auflistung bisheriger Projekte/Ausstellungen als Kollektiv; zusätzlich Kurzbiografien für jedes Gruppenmitglied.
- Die eingereichten Materialien sollten in einer pdf-Datei zusammengefügt werden und eine Gesamtgröße von 15MB nicht überschreiten.
Alle Unterlagen können sowohl in deutscher als auch in englischer Sprache eingereicht werden.
Bewerbungsschluss ist der 31.3.2021. Über die Vergabe des Preises entscheidet eine Jury bestehend aus: Cana Bilir-Meier (Künstlerin), Ulrike Boskamp (Vorstand Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung), María Inéz Pla za Lazo (Kritikerin und Kuratorin, Arts of the Working Class), Agnieszka Roguski (Künstlerische Leiterin 2021/2022, Arthur Boskamp-Stiftung).
