BLACK Communion is the sharing of experiences from the transnational Afro-diaspora, breaking down genre boundaries and encouraging experimentation through collaboration. This event series is a celebration of the connection between artists coming from various backgrounds and creative communities, united by their sonic activism ranging from composition to improvisation and sound art practices.
Empowering all, expanding the reach of our cultures through the sharing of our aural expression, entangling conventions with unexpected interventions. Enriching each artist as well as the audience in attendance.
For the second edition of Black Communion 2026, we welcome Afrorack, Christina Wheeler, and Opoku! On the first evening (September 24th), each artist will perform on their own, and on the second evening (September 25th), there will be open collaborations and improvisation amongst the three, with each evening hosted by Eiliyas.

Afrorack Brian Bamanya, known professionally as Afrorack, is a Ugandan multidisciplinary artist, engineer, and musician who has pioneered Africa’s first DIY modular synthesizer. Driven by a passion for
electronics and a desire to make modular synthesis accessible in Uganda, Bamanya constructed
his own synthesizer using locally sourced components and self-taught engineering skills. This
innovative instrument, also named “The Afrorack,” serves as both his artistic moniker and a
symbol of his commitment to blending technology with African musical traditions. He has
appeared at several international festivals which include Sonar, Rewire, Elevate, Dakar Art
Biennale and CTM among others.

Christina Wheeler is an African-American/German composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, multimedia artist, and performer whose work combines music, spatial sound, video, speculative narrative, and participatory performance. Working across composition, improvisation, electronics, and interdisciplinary media, Wheeler creates multimedia performance environments that invite audiences into imaginative exploration, collective reflection, and extraordinary experiences.
Wheeler has performed and recorded internationally with artists including David Byrne, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Nicole Mitchell, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Appearances include the Berlin Philharmonie, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, CTM Festival, Jazzfest Berlin, Radialsystem, Lincoln Center, and the Guggenheim Museum. A graduate of Harvard/Radcliffe Colleges and the Manhattan School of Music, Wheeler was awarded the 2026 German Jazz Prize.

opoku plays with music, sounds, images, DIY technology with a focus on improvisation,
experimentation and collaboration. opo is a member of Jokkoo Collective and is currently
studying dub histories, noise and electronics. opo also is strongly influenced by scifi, ancestral
afro musics, jazz, performance art and food. opo hopes to subvert hierarchies and binaries, whilst
learning life skills, most of all love(in) communication.
